When you buy a house, it’s a huge investment, perhaps the most expensive thing you’ll ever buy. Therefore, it’s important you have a good insurance policy and you understand what is covered by this policy. This will give you peace of mind, that if anything goes wrong, you’ll be able to get it fixed.
Home insurance will come under two categories, home insurance and content insurance. Home insurance covers the actual building, the structure of the roof, walls, windows and any other permanent fixtures of your home. Contents insurance covers everything inside your home such as your furniture and electronic devices. You can choose to have either of these types of insurance but if you’re a tenant, this will be your landlord’s responsibility.
What is covered by home insurance?
Home insurance exists to help ensure that should anything go wrong, you will have help paying for the damage or repairs necessary. However, insurance doesn’t cover general wear and tear such as needing a new roof because the current one hasn’t been repaired for many years.
However, if during a storm, a tree falls on your roof, your insurance will cover the cost of the damages. You can also choose to cover your house with accidental damage which will cover you if, for example, a football is kicked through your window and it is shattered.
This goes for your contents insurance too. For example, if your television is accidentally knocked over, the policy will cover the cost of the television. However, if you want to add this to your policy, you will likely have to pay a higher premium.
Single item cover
A single item limit is the maximum an insurer will pay for one item. So if you have items in your home that cost more than the single item limit, you will need to list these items individually. This is usually used for items such as jewellery and watches and can often be extended to cover your items when you carry them with you outside of the house.
Add ons
If you want extra coverage, you can choose add-ons for your policy. These include home emergency cover such as broken locks, legal cover in cases where you may need a lawyer and even bicycle cover!
